Polo in the past was patronised by the Royalty, after independence, Army was instrumental in
ensuring the survival of the game until the mid eighties when an inspired Royal, started the resurgence of Indian Polo. He was soon followed by the industrialists and other patrons
who corporatised Indian Polo in the next decade.
In the past, it was the royalty which had the time and resources to attain high standards. The last of the royal stalwarts were Rao
Raja Hanut Singh of Jodhpur and Sawai Man Singh of Jaipur went up to a handicap of nine at the peak of their careers. The next generation was too busy putting their
house in order and except for Colonel Bhawani Singh of Jaipur, the others hardly played any serious polo in their younger days.
Fortunately for the game, it was these very royals who carved out successful businesses out of their inheritance and turned to patronising the sport in a
bigger way than their fathers had ever done! The most notable amongst these are Arvind Singh Mewar of Udaipur, who single handily revolutionised the sport, Gaj Singh of Jodhpur who runs a
team which promises to bring back the Jodhpur glory of yesteryears and Vikramaditya Singh of Kashmir who not only fields his team but also plays as a solid back and every year emerges a better player!
